Children's Park in San Diego has recently undergone a $9 million revitalization project, reopening to the public in the Fall of 2023. The park, originally established in 1995 along the Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade in Downtown San Diego, now boasts a transformed 1.4-acre space that aligns with the city's Downtown Community Plan.
Aquatic Design Group provided comprehensive design, engineering, and construction observation services for the enhancement of the park's iconic Civic Pond, including coordinating the relocation of existing water feature spray columns around the new Boardwalk, resurfacing the water feature, upgrading and relocating the existing mechanical system, and installing new underwater lights.
In addition to the water feature improvements, the previously underutilized park now features a range of modern amenities, including a new children's play area, picnic tables, adult exercise equipment, an off-leash dog area, public restrooms with attendants, a multi-use lawn area, a new walkway through the Civic Pond, and a vendor building. San Diego-based artist Miki Iwasaki also contributed a site-specific public art piece titled "Petrichor," adding an abstract and cloud-like sculpture to the vibrant park space. The project not only enhances the quality of life for residents but also aligns with the city's vision of creating inclusive and dynamic spaces for families and children in downtown San Diego.
