The City of Dublin had a longstanding community need for year-round recreation/fitness and learning opportunities. Aquatic Design Group worked closely with stakeholders to provide a regional facility that truly has something for everyone.

SERVICES PROVIDED

THE CHALLENGE

The facility was over 20 years in the making and was put on hold and changed numerous times over the years. The aquatic center is part of the final phase of Emerald Glen Park’s master plan including a central plaza, amphitheater, and aquatic recreation center to compliment the group picnic areas, welcome plaza, water features, children’s playground, restroom facilities, a cricket pitch, and two large soccer fields that already existed on the 48-acre park in the heart of Dublin. Aquatic Design Group provided programming, planning, construction documents and construction observation services as required for the construction of a new indoor swimming pool, new outdoor swimming pool, new outdoor activity pool with play features, and a new outdoor six-slide waterslide complex.

The Solution

The final result is “The Wave” at Emerald Glen Park, a 31,000 square-foot, $43M facility aquatic facility inspired by the boardwalk and ocean. The indoor pool is a 25-yard warm water teaching pool with an accessible ramp, a peninsula and six, 25-yard lanes. The outdoor pool is a 25-meter by 25-yard competition pool with a peninsula that separates shallow water from deep water and eleven, 25-yard lanes. The activity pool has 4,945 square feet of shallow water, a large interactive aquatic play structure, and in-pool water play features. The six-slide waterslide complex features a straight open body slide, a thrilling enclosed body dropslide with a launching capsule on a trap door, two translucent spiraling body flume slides, a spiraling open body slide, and an enclosed body flume slide with a bowl-style landing. In addition, the center includes picnic areas, group cabanas, fire pits, and outdoor ping pong tables for a truly unique experience every time.

The Results

The Wave at Emerald Glen Park was designed and built to be a regional draw with something for everyone: waterpark, lap swimming, aquatic fitness, learn-to-swim, and recreational water fun for the non-swimmer. Six different slides truly make it feel like an exciting waterpark without the need to pay a typical waterpark fee. The outdoor pool can host swim meets and water polo, while still being an effective pool for recreational swimming, lap swimming and even learn-to-swim. The activity pool's large size and variety of features allows it to serve all ages effectively. In the end, the aquatic center doubled in size from the original concept but has been incredibly well-received in the community.
